a fly
zig zags
drunken loops
within
the small perimeter
of our balcony
not seeing
the wider world just beyond:
a majestic walnut tree
massive canopy of green,
of branches and leaves
dancing and twirling
with the wind
the crow who
swoops between
tall pines and sword-point
Cypress
the oleander bushes crowded,
flourishing
along our long fence,
human borders of territory
but all no match
for the vast, open sky
which somehow always
rises beyond us
this open dome
the fly could
easily access
and roam—
no cage, no bars—
or work keeping you,
little one!
Notice,
take full wing
of your
utter freedom
a good reminder
in spite of
your seeming choice
to stay
even this moment
in such tight
quarters
share
