Surprises

(July 31 - August 12, 2023)

The Baylands

at the end

  of San Antonio Road

pulls us in

  to its ever-shifting

    tides

each time

  a new mood

another season

this evening—

  still bright

with crisp blue sky,

  a breeze

winding through tall reeds

    and wild fennel,

we follow

  the dusty ochre path

closer

  to the flowing slough—

in search of carp

    as always—

there! a dark shadow

  like an eel,

    a black ribboned wave

along the murky

surface

near the edge

    of water and bank

and further still

  toward the clump

of oaks

    at the bend,

another hiking couple

  points to a

    spectacular

      5-foot-long, slithering

gopher snake—

  shimmering yellow with

umber triangle patterns

  and spotted belly—

    weaving

through low-lying bushes,

      red ground cover—

  on the hunt,

a steady

  searching

    limb-less body

of pure

muscle
